Cyclone Senyar: Met Office predicts delayed arrival of winter in south Bengal

Kolkata, Nov 23 (LatestNewsX) – The Meteorological Department issued a brief on Sunday, noting that the arrival of winter in south‑Bengal districts and Kolkata hinges on the path and influence of Cyclone Senyar, which is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal later this week.
At the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, officials reported that a low‑pressure disturbance has already developed over the bay and is expected to strengthen into a depression by around November 24. A full cyclonic system, named Senyar by the United Arab Emirates, is projected to form around November 26. This would make it the second storm to appear in the Bay of Bengal after the monsoon has ended.
For comparison, Cyclone Montha struck near Kakinada on October 28 as a severe cyclone. At present, scientists are uncertain about the eventual trajectory of Senyar, but they anticipate that the coastal weather in Bengal will likely feel its effects.
“We are now keeping an eye on the low‑pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. It will gradually develop into a depression tomorrow and by Wednesday into a cyclonic storm. If the system moves towards the Bengal and Odisha coast, then it will have a direct impact on the weather here. This will thwart the onset of winter in South Bengal districts and Kolkata as the temperature will be pushed up,” said a meteorological department official.
The same official added, “If the system moves towards any other direction, then it will have an indirect impact on the weather conditions in the state. This will also increase the temperature, but will not have a prolonged impact.”
“We are monitoring the system. In the next two days, we will get a clear picture of the system and accordingly, weather predictions will be made,” the officer continued.
In the meantime, fishermen were cautioned against venturing into the southwest Bay of Bengal until November 25 and into the southeast Bay of Bengal until November 28.
