Nine of Taiwan’s key allies have teamed up to urge the United Nations to stay neutral and push back against China’s political pressure over Taiwan’s role in UN activities. In a joint letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, these nations called for fair treatment ahead of the 80th UN General Assembly debate.
The letter came from the permanent representatives of Belize, Eswatini, Guatemala, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tuvalu. They made it clear that UN Resolution 2758 from 1971 gets twisted too often to keep Taiwan out of UN bodies. That resolution, they say, only dealt with China’s seat at the UN table—it didn’t touch on Taiwan’s participation or stop the island nation from joining global efforts.
These diplomats want the UN to stop using the resolution as an excuse to block Taiwanese experts and journalists from meetings or events. They call these restrictions unfair and discriminatory. The group also warned that misusing the resolution could spark bigger problems, threatening peace in the Taiwan Strait and the wider Indo-Pacific region.
Instead, the allies pressed the UN to fix these issues and let Taiwan join in meaningfully. This would help Taiwan contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, from fighting climate change to boosting global health.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York thanked these supportive nations and echoed the call for the UN to find real ways to include Taiwan. This move highlights growing worries about Beijing’s rising sway in international organizations, as Taiwan and its friends work to protect regional stability.
