BJP, allies hail GST reforms as ‘big gift’ to middle class, say relief will boost economy

The GST Council delivers big news for India’s middle class!
In a major move, India has announced wide-ranging reforms in its Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. The goal? Make everyday essentials cheaper and put more money into the pockets of common people.

The council has reduced the number of GST slabs from multiple to just two main rates: 5% and 18%. There’s also a higher 40% rate for sin goods like alcohol and tobacco. Many essential items, including groceries, footwear, textiles, fertilisers, and renewable energy products, will now cost less. Items that were taxed at 12% and 28% are now falling into these lower slabs, giving relief to households across the country.

This change is seen as a big gift to the middle class and everyone striving to make ends meet. Leaders from political parties are praising the move, calling it a historic step. BJP leaders, including Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, say it fulfills Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise of offering a “big GST gift” during Independence Day. Sachdeva explained that as of now, household items will be cheaper, and from upcoming festivals like Navratri, people will enjoy even more benefits, especially in healthcare and education sectors.

Other political leaders also see this as a festive season boost. JD(U) spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan calls it a “bumper Diwali gift,” especially for farmers, homemakers, and small traders. He pointed out that falling taxes will help farmers sell their products at better prices and support traders struggling with US tariffs.

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh added that the government’s aim is to give relief to the common man, who is the main taxpayer. He said, “This is a very good step because ordinary people should get some relief from taxes.”

Overall, this simplified GST structure aims to boost growth, increase disposable income, and make everyday life cheaper for millions of Indians. It’s a positive move just in time for upcoming festivals and the festive season!
