
Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and chair of the Gates Foundation, gave a big shoutout to India during an event in Seattle, calling it a powerhouse of innovation. He highlighted how India’s groundbreaking ideas could transform lives for millions in the Global South.
The gathering, put together by the Indian Consulate General in Seattle and the Gates Foundation, took place on Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary—also known as Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Non-Violence. Gates shared his excitement about teaming up with India to reach its goal of Viksit Bharat 2047, a vision for a developed India by 2047.
“It’s fitting that we’re coming together on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi,” Gates said. “The ideals he championed, the equality and dignity of every person, are foundational to the work we do. Today, India stands as a global leader in innovation and is pioneering solutions with the potential to save and improve millions of lives across the Global South. We look forward to continuing to partner with India on its journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047.”
Top officials from Washington state and Seattle’s city government joined the event at the Gates Foundation headquarters. It celebrated Indian culture through arts displays, traditional cuisine, and more. Jonathan Granoff, president of the U.S. Global Security Institute, also spoke about the relevance of Gandhian values in today’s world.
Earlier that day, several other tributes to Gandhi lit up the Greater Seattle area. At a statue near the Bellevue Public Library, Bellevue City Council members honored the Mahatma’s legacy. Over at Seattle Center, near the iconic Space Needle, Washington State Senator Vandana Slatter laid floral tributes at Gandhi’s bust. She was joined by Eddie Rye, chairman and founder of the Martin Luther King–Gandhi Foundation.
A wide range of Indian-American leaders showed up for these Seattle and Bellevue events. Young school kids even performed Gandhi’s favorite hymns, adding a heartfelt touch to the celebrations.
