The Election Commission of India (ECI) kicked off its third Conference for Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all states and union territories on Wednesday. Held at the India International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi, the event focused on gearing up for the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar inaugurated the conference, joined by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. Everyone aimed to keep things uniform, transparent, and inclusive across the country during this big voter list update.
Bihar’s CEO stole the show with a detailed presentation on their state’s SIR strategies, challenges, and smart innovations. It gave other CEOs valuable tips to improve their own electoral roll revisions.
CEOs from different states and UTs shared key stats, like the total number of electors, the last revision’s qualifying date, and the current status of electoral rolls after the previous SIR. They also updated everyone on digitizing rolls and uploading them to official CEO websites, plus mapping today’s voters with old records for accuracy.
To make voting fair and easy for all, the ECI reviewed plans to rationalize polling stations. They stressed that no station should handle more than 1,200 electors, ensuring better access for everyone.
Inclusivity took center stage too. CEOs proposed simple documents to speed up voter registration without compromising security. The Commission made it clear: every eligible citizen must get on the rolls, and no unqualified person should sneak in.
The meeting also checked the progress on appointing and training key players like District Election Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and Booth Level Agents (BLAs). These teams drive the success of the SIR exercise.
With elections always in the spotlight, this conference shows the ECI’s commitment to clean and accessible voter lists across India.
