Cristin Milioti just made history at the Emmys, snagging her first-ever win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series. The talented actress took home the trophy for her gripping portrayal of Sofia Gigante in HBO’s hit show The Penguin. The ceremony happened on Sunday night in Los Angeles, and fans are buzzing about her big moment.
This Emmy marks Milioti’s debut nomination and victory, as reported by Variety. During her heartfelt acceptance speech, she brought some humor to the stage by joking about her notes. "Sorry, I wrote this on the back of notes I took in therapy the other day, so don’t look at the back," she quipped, drawing laughs from the crowd.
Milioti got real about the tough times we’re all facing. "It’s very hard to make sense of being alive right now in this world," she said. But she quickly shifted to gratitude: "I’m deeply grateful for the bright spots. Making this show with our incredible cast and crew, and getting to inhabit this woman, was a bright spot for me. Despite it being very grisly, playing her felt like flying."
From stage to screen, Milioti’s career has been a rollercoaster of success. She kicked things off in theater, winning a Tony Award in 2012 for her role as Girl in the Broadway musical Once. TV fans know her best as Tracy McConnell, the beloved Mother from How I Met Your Mother, where she first appeared in Season 8 and became a regular in the final Season 9.
Her film highlights include a standout performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), mind-bending episodes of Black Mirror like "USS Callister" (2017) and "USS Callister: Into Infinity" (2025), plus the fun time-loop comedy Palm Springs (2020) from The Lonely Island team.
With The Penguin earning rave reviews, Milioti’s Emmy win feels like a well-deserved spotlight on her rising star. Congrats to her—what a night for Emmy winners!
