Bhopal, Dec. 28—A court overseen by the Central Bureau of Investigation in Bhopal handed down a five‑year sentence of rigorous imprisonment to former Postal Assistant Rajnish Tiwari. The ruling, delivered on Saturday, also imposed a fine of ₹14,000 on Tiwari.
The case dates back to April 20, 2022, when a complaint was filed by the Senior Superintendent of Post Office, Gwalior. According to the filing, Tiwari, while posted as a Postal Assistant at the Lashkar Head Post Office, orchestrated a fraud that saw ₹13.85 lakh diverted from the post office.
Investigators say Tiwari tampered with electronic records in the Finacle Internet Module, targeting 17 recurring‑deposit accounts held by customers. He then moved the misappropriated funds into three unauthorized regular or savings accounts, as well as his own joint savings accounts, and later withdrew the money using stolen ATM cards issued by the post office.
Following a thorough inquiry, the CBI secured a conviction and the court imposed the five‑year term. The same day, the bureau also arrested Ranjan Bharti, a Senior Secretariat Assistant at a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. Bharti was accused of accepting a ₹60,000 bribe from a security‑manpower contractor in exchange for clearing bills totaling ₹3.84 lakh. He was taken to police custody for three days and is now before a special court.
