Bollywood star Rani Mukerji has finally snagged her first National Award for Best Actress after more than 30 years in the industry, and she’s dedicating the honor straight to her late father, Ram Mukherjee.
Rani picked up the prestigious award for her powerful performance in the legal drama “Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway,” directed by Ashima Chibber. The movie also features strong turns from Anirban Bhattacharya, Neena Gupta, and Jim Sarbh.
“I’m truly overwhelmed to receive my first National Award in my 30-year journey as an actor,” Rani shared. “This honor means the world to me, and I want to dedicate it to my late father, who always dreamt of this moment for me.”
She opened up about her emotions, saying, “I miss him deeply today, and I know it’s his blessing and my mother’s constant strength and inspiration that guided me through the role of Mrs. Chatterjee.”
Rani didn’t stop there—she showered thanks on her loyal fans. “To my incredible fans, thank you for being by my side through every high and low. Your unwavering love and support has been my greatest motivation. I know how much this award means to all of you, and it brings me immense joy to see how happy you are.”
The actress also shared the spotlight with her team, crediting director Ashima Chibber and producers Nikkhil Advani, Monisha Advani, and Madhu Bhojwani. “Above all, I thank my entire cast and crew from Estonia and India,” she added. “Without them, this film couldn’t have been made, especially during the tough COVID challenges. The whole team poured their hearts into this powerful story, and I’m deeply grateful to each one.”
Rani gave a nod to the National Award jury too, calling the recognition a highlight. She sees the film and this win as a tribute to mothers everywhere—their strength, courage, and endless love.
“Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway” draws from the true story of Indian immigrants Sagarika Chakraborty and Anurup Bhattacharya. In 2011, Norwegian authorities took away their children, sparking a fierce battle that inspired the movie.
The role hit close to home for Rani, a mother herself. “This story moved me deeply because it captures the unbreakable spirit of an immigrant mother fighting against all odds in a foreign land to protect her child,” she explained. “As a mother, this role felt incredibly personal. Through this film, we honor the spirit of motherhood and remind everyone of the quiet power women carry every day.”
