US President Donald Trump reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a warm phone call on Tuesday, marking their first chat in months. The reason? To wish Modi a happy 75th birthday and strengthen the growing India-US friendship.
Modi shared his delight on X (formerly Twitter), calling Trump a “friend” and thanking him for the kind words. “Thank you, my friend, President Trump, for your phone call and warm greetings on my 75th birthday,” Modi posted. He added that he’s fully committed, just like Trump, to boosting the India-US Comprehensive Global Partnership to new levels. Modi also voiced support for Trump’s efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict peacefully.
This friendly call comes at a busy time for India-US trade talks. On the same day, US Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch met with India’s chief trade negotiator, Rajesh Agrawal, in Delhi. Both sides called the discussions “positive and forward-looking.” India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the talks covered key aspects of a potential trade deal and agreed to speed up efforts for a mutually beneficial agreement.
Just days earlier, Trump announced on Truth Social that trade negotiations with India are back on track. “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two nations,” he wrote on September 9. Trump expressed confidence in a successful outcome, saying, “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries.” He also praised Modi as a “very good friend” and looked forward to more talks soon.
Modi responded positively on X, highlighting the strong bond between the two nations. “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership,” he said.
Adding to the momentum, Sergio Gor—Trump’s nominee for US Ambassador to India—spoke at his Senate confirmation hearing last week. He described India as a key “strategic partner” and pledged to deepen defence and economic ties. Gor even shared that a trade deal is close at hand. “We’re actively negotiating with the Indians right now. We’re not that far apart on a deal. In fact, they’re negotiating down the nitty-gritty of a deal,” he noted.
These developments signal exciting times ahead for India-US relations, with trade, defence, and global partnerships taking center stage.
