On Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, the Fit India Mission kicked off its Freedom Run 6.0 across India, rallying people to ditch single-use plastic and keep public spaces litter-free. This nationwide push for cleanliness aims to boost fitness and healthier habits for everyone.
In New Delhi, the action heated up at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Early risers, including officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), joined a fun plog run—think jogging while scooping up trash along the way. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) shared details in a recent release, highlighting how the event blended exercise with eco-friendly vibes.
Hari Ranjan Rao, MYAS Secretary Sports and the event’s chief guest, led the charge. He teamed up with Ripu Daman, India’s “Plog Man” and guest of honor, to inspire participants. Other key figures included Kunal, MYAS Joint Secretary for Sports, and Mayank Srivastava, SAI’s Deputy Director General. Groups like SundaysOnCycle, Yogasana Bharat, and MYBharat jumped in with enthusiasm, turning the morning into a community celebration.
The event’s catchy tagline—”Swacchhta se Swasthya ki or,” or “On the way to good health through cleanliness”—captured the spirit perfectly. Organizers even staged a lively street play to show how simple changes, like skipping single-use plastics, can promote better hygiene in everyday life.
This month-long cleanliness drive starts today, October 2, and wraps up on October 31, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. It runs simultaneously in state capitals, union territories, and SAI regional centers, welcoming people of all ages.
Hari Ranjan Rao shared his excitement: “It was great seeing Delhi folks from every age group hit the plog run. If we all keep public spots litter-free and cut out single-use plastic, we’ll hit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India, or Viksit Bharat. It’s up to us to tidy our cities and neighborhoods—it keeps us fit and healthy, right in line with the Fit India Mission’s goals.”
Ripu Daman, who’s been championing the Fit India movement since its 2019 launch by the Prime Minister, added: “Indians often clean their homes but skip the surroundings. This run symbolizes clearing the ‘litter’ in our minds too. Clean areas mean healthy bodies—every citizen should join initiatives like this.”
The MYAS spearheads Freedom Run 6.0, partnering with Fitspire, RED FM, and Rapido to make it a hit. Whether you’re into plogging or just want to support anti-plastic efforts, events like this show how small steps can lead to big changes for a cleaner, fitter India.
