Russian President Vladimir Putin gave high praise to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a speech in Sochi, calling him a wise leader who always puts his country first. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club on Thursday, Putin highlighted the strong bond between Russia and India, describing it as a “privileged strategic partnership” that dates back about 15 years.
“People in India remember this connection, and so do we,” Putin said, according to Russia Today. He added that Modi leads with his nation’s interests at heart, making smart choices for India’s future.
This positive note comes ahead of Putin’s planned visit to India in December. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is set to head to New Delhi first to lay the groundwork for the summit and talk over key bilateral issues. Lavrov shared the details during the 80th United Nations General Assembly session on September 27, signaling ongoing diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Putin also weighed in on U.S. tariffs hitting Indian imports, especially in the context of Russia-India energy deals. He warned that if India stops buying Russian oil, it could face hefty economic hits—up to $9-10 billion in losses. But standing firm against sanctions would avoid those costs while protecting India’s dignity and strategic autonomy.
“There’s no politics here, just straight economics,” Putin explained. “Why turn down our energy resources and deal with domestic backlash? Indians won’t let anyone humiliate them, and I know Prime Minister Modi won’t bend to outside pressure.”
These comments follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent UN speech, where he accused China and India of fueling the Ukraine war by keeping up purchases of Russian oil. Putin’s remarks underscore the close Russia-India relations amid global tensions over energy and trade.
