Chetla Agrani Durga Puja pandal showcases ‘Samudra Manthan’ theme with over 3 crore rudraksha

Kolkata’s vibrant Durga Puja celebrations just got even more captivating this year. The Chetla Agrani Club unveiled its stunning pandal on September 26, drawing inspiration from the epic theme “Amrit Kumbher Shondhane,” or “In Search of the Nectar.” At the heart of it all stands a massive Shivalinga, crafted from over three crore Rudraksha beads, bringing the ancient story of Samudra Manthan—the churning of the ocean—to life.
Organizers say this setup honors both the grand Maha Kumbh Mela festival and the classic Bengali novel “Amrit Kumbher Shondhane” by author Samaresh Basu. Visitors can watch live performances by artists from Allahabad and Varanasi, who play traditional damru drums and tasha instruments to amp up the energy.
Chetla Agrani holds a special spot in Kolkata’s Durga Puja scene, often called the “Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim Puja” since the mayor serves as its chief patron. This year’s focus on the quest for Amritakumbha—the nectar of immortality—promises a mesmerizing experience.
Shatabdi Das, a key member of the Chetla Agrani Durga Puja Committee, shared details with . “Our pandal draws from the Samudra Manthan legend, where gods and demons churned the ocean on Mount Mandara to find Amrita,” she explained. “Goddess Durga appears in her fierce Brahmanacharini form, and we’ve decked out the entire space with those three crore Rudraksha beads. You’ll also spot scenes of Lord Shiva battling demons right here in the mandap.”
Das is buzzing with excitement as crowds start pouring in. “The pandal opened today, and we’re hoping for huge numbers to join the festivities,” she added.
Safety comes first for the organizers. They’ve set up fire extinguishers and first-aid stations, plus two wheelchairs for senior citizens. Extra exit doors help manage the flow, and CSC teams handle all electrical needs to keep things running smoothly.
