George Clooney declares he won’t be ‘kissing a girl’ on-screen anymore after talk with wife Amal
George Clooney has decided to pull back from on‑screen romantic moments, a choice he said came after a frank talk with his wife, Amal. “I’ve been trying to go the route Paul Newman did – ‘Okay, well, I’m not kissing a girl anymore,’” the “Ocean’s Eleven” star, now 64, revealed to the Daily Mail in a fresh interview.
In a later conversation, he explained that when he hit 60 he felt the need to reflect on his life and career. “When I turned 60, I had a conversation with my wife,” he told reporters. “I said, ‘Look, I can still play basketball with the boys. I play with 25‑year‑old guys. I can still hang, I’m in shape. But in 25 years, I’m 85 years old. It doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat, that’s a real number.’”
Clooney first burst onto the Hollywood scene in the 1994 medical drama “ER,” playing the charismatic Dr. Doug Ross, and went on to star in films where he shared kisses with a roster of leading ladies: Michelle Pfeiffer in “One Fine Day,” Jennifer Lopez in “Out of Sight,” Natascha McElhone in “Solaris,” Vera Farmiga in “Up in the Air,” Violante Placido in “The American,” and most recently Julia Roberts in “Ticket to Paradise.” Many of those scenes marked the young actor as a heartthrob.
Earlier this year, he hinted at a shift in his film choices during a “60 Minutes” interview, announcing that he would no longer take on romantic roles because of his age. “Look, I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to compete with 25‑year‑old leading men,” Clooney said in March. “That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore.”
Still, his early career was not without criticism. In a 2022 interview with the New York Times, he recalled being told by a director to adjust his on‑screen kisses: “I remember early on in my career, I had to do a kissing scene with this girl, and the director goes, ‘Not like that.’” Clooney replied, “And I was like, ‘Dude, that’s my move! That’s what I do in real life!’”
Clooney and Amal, who married in 2014, welcomed twins Ella and Alexander in 2017. In 2025, the couple revealed that they had chosen to leave Los Angeles for a quieter life on a French farm. “We’re very lucky,” the “Jay Kelly” actor told Esquire in October. “You know, we live on a farm in France.”
He added that unlike his own youth, his children now enjoy a life free from the trappings of celebrity, sharing meals and completing chores together. He also expressed concern for their upbringing, saying that he worried about raising them in a Hollywood culture that too often equates a child’s value with fame. “I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids,” he said.
