Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has released the 21st installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, targeting farmers in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand who suffered heavy losses from recent floods, landslides, and damaged crops.
This aid comes at a critical time for these farming communities, hit hard by natural disasters that have disrupted lives and livelihoods. The government transferred more than Rs 540 crore directly to the bank accounts of over 27 lakh farmers in these states, including about 2.7 lakh women farmers. Each eligible farmer receives Rs 2,000 to help cover urgent needs.
Chouhan stressed that this PM-KISAN payment offers quick relief as farmers rebuild. “The government stands firmly with every farmer, no matter the challenge,” he said during the release. He added that the funds will help families buy essentials, stock up on seeds and fertilizers for the next planting season, and regain confidence to get back to work.
Beyond the money, Chouhan called it a strong message of support, ensuring no farmer faces these tough times alone. The move builds on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the flood-hit areas earlier this month. There, Modi announced major relief packages: Rs 1,500 crore for Himachal Pradesh, Rs 1,600 crore for Punjab, and Rs 1,200 crore for Uttarakhand. These include ex-gratia payments for families of the deceased and injured, plus help through the PM CARES for Children scheme.
Breaking down the latest transfers: Himachal Pradesh got Rs 160.21 crore for 8,01,045 farmers; Punjab received Rs 221.98 crore for 11,09,895 farmers; and Uttarakhand saw Rs 157.83 crore go to 7,89,128 farmers.
Since PM-KISAN launched on February 24, 2019, these three states have received over Rs 13,626 crore in total support, showing the Indian government’s ongoing commitment to farmer welfare amid climate challenges and disasters.
