New Delhi, Oct 23 – The Delhi Police just closed one of the biggest crackdown operations on inter‑state crime, taking down four notorious gangsters from the Sigma organisation that has been making headlines in Bihar.
Police officer Surendra Kumar, a senior officer in the Crime Branch, told reporters this morning that the gang had been hiding in the capital for days after a tip from Bihar Police. “We traced them thanks to the leads from our Bihar partners,” he said.
A key point of the police briefing was that the Sigma gang, led by Ranjan Pathak, was allegedly planning a big criminal flare‑up during the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. Pathak, who carries a ₹25,000 reward on his head, is wanted in at least eight cases and has been linked to high‑profile murders in Bihar.
The police also said that one of the gang members had already committed a murder in Bihar after the election code of conduct went into effect on Oct 6. Investigators are now questioning contacts of the accused to uncover the gang’s overall motive.
In a late‑night operation in North‑West Delhi, Delhi Police officers set a trap based on intelligence from Bihar Police. When the four men—Ranjan Pathak (25), Bimalesh Mahato (25), Manish Pathak (33) and Aman Thakur (21)—opened fire, officers returned fire and injured the gang. The men were taken to a hospital in Rohini, but doctors declared them dead.
Police recovered a pistol and the gang’s stolen car during the encounter. The joint operation involved teams from both Delhi Police and Bihar Police.
The Sigma gang has long been a thorn in the state police’s side, and this latest bust is seen as a major blow to organized crime linked to the upcoming elections.
