Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to meet U.S. President Donald Trump next week during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The key goal? Push Washington to hit Russia with tougher sanctions amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.
Zelenskyy shared his plans on Saturday via X, formerly Twitter, as Russia stepped up its attacks on Ukraine. This comes at a time when Eastern European countries worry about the conflict spilling over their borders. “We now expect strong sanctions steps from the United States as well—Europe is doing its part,” Zelenskyy posted.
Last week, Trump hinted he’s open to major sanctions on Moscow. But he linked them to NATO allies agreeing to stop buying Russian oil. Trump has tried to broker a ceasefire, yet Russia shows no signs of backing down.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy also wants to discuss long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. These would protect the country from future Russian aggression, even if a truce happens. Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, has warned he won’t allow Western troops in Ukraine.
The timing feels urgent after Russia’s massive overnight assault—one of the biggest in months. Moscow fired 40 missiles and about 580 drones, killing at least three people and injuring dozens more in Ukraine.
NATO countries are ramping up defenses along Europe’s eastern borders to counter these threats. On Saturday, Poland’s military scrambled Polish and allied jets in a defensive move after Russian strikes landed near the Polish border. The United Kingdom joined in too, with its fighter jets flying their first NATO mission under Operation Eastern Sentry. They patrolled Polish airspace to watch for any Russian aerial dangers.
Tensions spiked further when three Russian fighter jets briefly entered Estonian airspace on Friday. Russia’s Defense Ministry denied it, but Estonian officials confirmed the 12-minute violation using radar and eyewitness accounts. Colonel Ants Kiviselg, head of Estonia’s Military Intelligence Centre, said they’re still checking if it was deliberate.
As the Ukraine-Russia war drags on, these moves highlight growing worries about regional stability and NATO’s role in keeping the peace.
