India’s athletes kept the momentum strong at the South Asian Athletics Championships 2025, held in Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium. The host country added 18 medals on Saturday, including seven golds, eight silvers and three bronzes, bringing its total to 32 medals.
Sri Lanka finished second, claiming eight golds and 23 medals in all. Nepal rounds out the top three, taking home three bronze medals so far.
Highlights from Saturday
Women’s 100 m hurdles – Nandhini K ran 13.56 seconds for the gold, while fellow Indian Moumita Mondal earned silver. Sri Lanka’s Wijewera Vitha finished third.
Men’s 110 m hurdles – Manav R led the field with a 13.78‑second run for gold. Sri Lanka’s Ranatungage Roshan took silver, and India’s Krishik M rounded out the podium with bronze.
Women’s 1500 m – Sanjana Singh sprinted to a second gold of the meet in 4:25.36. Sri Lanka’s Nimali finished second, and India’s Kajal Kanwade captured bronze.
Men’s 1500 m – Arjun Waskale dominated with a 3:54.58 win. Gallage Rusiru Chath and Rojideen Mohamathu from Sri Lanka completed the medal set.
Women’s 400 m – Neeru Pathak ran 53.15 to win gold. Iceland’s Olimba Steffi was second, and Sri Lanka’s Mendis Balapuwa Sayu took bronze.
Women’s discus throw – Seema threw 55.14 m for gold; Nidhi earned silver, and Sri Lanka’s Asgiriye Gedara Vinod took the bronze.
Men’s discus throw – Kirpal Singh led with a 56.22‑meter throw. India’s Nirbhay Singh was second, and Sri Lankan W.D.M. Milant Sampat earned bronze.
Men’s high jump – Sri Lanka’s A. Samaraweera cleared 2.17 m for gold. India’s Rohit (2.15 m) and Aadarsh Ram (2.09 m) took silver and bronze.
Friday’s Successes
India capped Friday with a haul of 12 medals, including:
- Gold: Samardeep Gill (shot put, 19.59 m), Prince Kumar (5000 m, 14:22.17), Sanjana Singh (5000 m, 15:38.70), Yogita (shot put, 15.85 m), and the mixed 4×400 m relay team (3:20.13).
- Silver: Pranav Gurav (100 m, 10.32 s), Seema (5000 m, 15:40.55), Ravi Kumar (shot put, 17.95 m), Shiksha (shot put, 15.83 m), Poorva Sawant (triple jump, 13.03 m), and Dinesh V (triple jump, 16.14 m).
- Bronze: Harsh Raut (100 m, 10.42 s), Sudeshna Shivankar (100 m, 11.78 s), and Sebastian V S (triple jump, 15.88 m).
India’s athletes continue to dominate the region, building on their strong showing in Ranchi. The South Asian Athletics Championships 2025 remains a key event for track and field stars across the continent.
