US‑based AI company Anthropic is opening its first office in India, setting up a new hub in Bengaluru. The move follows a meeting between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who discussed how the company will help India grow its AI capabilities across education, healthcare and agriculture.
Amodei posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Delhi‑based CEO met Modi “to discuss Anthropic expansion to India—where Claude code use is up 5× since June.” He added that India’s deployment of AI in key sectors will shape the future of the field.
The Bengaluru office marks Anthropic’s second office in the Indo‑Pacific after Tokyo. Karnataka’s minister for Electronics, IT and BT, Priyank Kharge, confirmed the decision via X, saying Bengaluru sits at the heart of the world’s most dynamic tech centres and offers an unmatched talent pool.
Kharge highlighted that Bengaluru ranks fifth worldwide for AI and deep‑tech ecosystems, with more than 100,000 AI professionals – 50 % of India’s AI talent. He said Anthropic’s arrival will expand local opportunities for research, development and product creation.
Anthropic is known for AI safety and research, focusing on reliable, interpretable and steerable AI systems. Its flagship product, Claude, is a next‑generation AI assistant.
The new office aligns with India’s government push to champion artificial intelligence as a key growth driver across industries.
