Turkey has dropped tariffs on several US imports, including alcoholic drinks, cars, tobacco, and cosmetics. The country’s trade ministry announced the move on Monday, easing tensions in US-Turkey trade relations.
Back in 2018, Turkey slapped extra duties on various American products under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. This came after the US hit Turkish steel and aluminum exports with its own tariffs. Now, those additional charges are gone. The ministry explained that successful talks with the US, plus WTO consultations and panel reports, led to this decision.
The ministry highlighted strong economic ties between the two nations, with both sides eyeing a whopping $100 billion in bilateral trade. This step forward happens just before Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan meets US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday. The leaders are also set to join the UN General Assembly in New York this week, where they could discuss ways to boost trade even more.
