Explosive device destroys prominent Italian journalist Sigfrido Ranucci’s car outside his home: ‘Serious act of intimidation’

A car bomb exploded under the vehicle of Italy’s leading investigative journalist, Sigfrido Ranucci, when it was parked in front of his home in the town of Pomezia, south of Rome. The blast rattled a second family car and damaged the neighboring house, but fortunately no one was hurt.

The message came on a Friday evening, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni quickly condemned the act, calling it a serious intimidation attempt. She said, “Freedom and independence of information are essential values of our democracies, which we will continue to defend.” Ranucci, the front‑line anchor of the RAI3 show Report, is known for breaking stories on politicians and business leaders.

Police, firefighters and forensic teams have been on the scene to investigate the explosion. Report, one of Italy’s few investigative TV programs, regularly exposes corruption and misconduct. Ranucci recently cleared a defamation lawsuit tied to a Report story, adding another chapter to his battle for press freedom. The attack underscores the risks faced by journalists who expose power.
