During a bustling holiday dinner hosted by the Met Council at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel near Columbus Circle, Benjamin Tisch— the brother of Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch— took to the stage to present an award. He seized the moment to brand the incoming mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani an “enemy” of Jewish people, voicing deep unease about the city’s future. Tisch, who himself is Jewish, cautioned that Mamdani’s hard‑line stance on Israel, even threatening to detain Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York, could have serious repercussions.
The Met Council, a nonprofit devoted to fighting poverty within the Jewish community, holds an annual gala each December to raise funds and awareness. Tisch’s remarks came only weeks after Jessica Tisch accepted an offer from Mamdani to continue as police commissioner, a decision that left many in the community surprised given the stark policy differences—especially over bail reform, policing age limits, and Israeli affairs.
Two days earlier, Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan echoed similar concerns at a dinner for the UJA‑Federation Wall Street. He proclaimed, “Someone who uses antisemitism in their campaign and normalizes antisemitism, he is our enemy,” a sentiment that resonated with many in the crowd.
The Tisch family, apart from Jessica, invested heavily in the mayoral race to support the opponent of Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo, hoping to keep a socialist candidate out of office. When asked for comment, neither Benjamin Tisch nor representatives for Mamdani responded. In a statement, Jessica Tisch empathized with the apprehensions of the Jewish community while affirming her confidence that the mayor-elect would keep his promise to serve all residents of New York.
