‘Was passionate about contributing to welfare of society’: PM Modi saddened by passing of Shivraj Patil

New Delhi – On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened his eyes with profound sadness as he learned of the death of former Union Home Minister and senior Congress stalwart Shivraj Patil. The 90‑year‑old, who had been a central figure in Indian politics for nearly five decades, passed away in his hometown of Latur at his residence, Devghar, after a short illness, according to family members.

Modi took to the social media platform X where he wrote, “Saddened by the passing of Shri Shivraj Patil Ji. He was an experienced leader, having served as MLA, MP, Union Minister, Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly as well as the Lok Sabha during his long years in public life.” He went on to say, “He was passionate about contributing to the welfare of society. I have had many interactions with him over the years, the most recent one being when he came to my residence a few months ago. My thoughts are with his family in this sad hour. Om Shanti,” adding the familiar benediction.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also posted a message on X, expressing his condolences: “He was a seasoned leader, who served the country in various capacities and made effective contributions towards India’s progress. My thoughts are with his family and well‑wishers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.” The former minister’s tribute underscored Patil’s broad service record and the respect he commanded across party lines.

Patil’s life work included a decade as India’s Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008, a term as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1991‑1996), and roles as Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh (2010‑2015). His journey began in local politics when he was elected municipal council chief of Latur before moving to the state assembly in the early 1970s. He later represented Latur in the Lok Sabha a record seven times, earning a reputation as one of the most influential leaders from the region. He lost his last election in 2004 to BJP’s Rupatai Patil Nilangekar, but his legacy remained intact.

Colleagues remember Patil for his dignified demeanor, refraining even from personal barbs during heated debates. He was also celebrated for his deep knowledge and love of reading, his methodical study habits, and his eloquence. Fluent in Marathi, English, and Hindi, he possessed an impressive grasp of constitutional matters, which made him a respected voice in parliament and beyond.

At home, he is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter‑in‑law Archana—a BJP leader—and two granddaughters. The family is now coping with the loss of a man whose career spanned public service, governance, and mentorship for several generations.

As India mourns, tributes from across the political spectrum highlight the enduring impact of Shivraj Patil, whose life was a testament to public duty, wisdom, and humility. The nation remembers him not only for his office titles but for the genuine concern he showed for the welfare of its citizens.
