‘Enormous’ goose barrels through woman’s front door, sending her into a panic thinking it was a thief
Check this out! A gigantic Canada goose apparently burst through an English woman’s front door, startling her in a way that made her think a thief had smashed the glass.
Lynne Sewell and a friend were glued to the TV on a Wednesday night when a sudden, thunder‑clattering boom shook the house. Sewell later recounted that the massive bird was wedged in the front door’s glass, and it wasn’t until the glass shattered that the fowl emerged onto the floor.
“My friend ran out first because I was frightened — and he shouted ‘there’s a bird with its head through the glass,’” Sewell told reporters. She added that the pounding bang and the sheer size of the geese made her believe someone was trying to force the door open, “and it was enormous.”
The bewildered goose, after breaking the window, waddled off and eventually settled on the porch. Although the friends had no nearby police or wildlife responders available that night, they kept the bird comforted with a blanket, water, and a bowl of porridge oats until daylight.
“We didn’t know if it was alive or dead,” she said. “We opened the door a bit and pushed a little small blanket in there for it, just in case, and a bowl of water, some porridge oats, because we didn’t know what else to give him. I was thinking about it all night in bed, wondering what to expect the next morning.”
The next day, the Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital in Kibworth Harcourt arrived to rescue the feathered visitor. The goose, suffering only minor cuts and a small laceration to its beak, is expected to recover fully after receiving pain relief and antibiotics.
Amy Blower, one of the rescuers, explained that the bird might have been exhausted after a long flight and misjudged its landing. “It’s very usual to be in the middle of a housing estate and flying that late at night,” she noted.
“Surprisingly, he’s just come off with a few minor scrapes and wounds from the glass he’s smashed through. He had a small laceration to his beak and one just on the left side of his body — but other than that, he was pretty much absolutely fine.”
Sewell has boarded up her front door and begun repairs, but she remains relieved that the goose will be released back into the wild once it’s fully healed. “I really don’t know how it could have gone through that glass and survived,” she expressed. “The chances of that happening, it’s just not what you expect, is it?”
