At Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in Arizona on September 22, former President Donald Trump delivered a passionate speech, warning that the conservative activist’s killing targeted everyone who shares his views. Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University in Utah on September 10.
Trump told the crowd, “The gun was pointed at him, but the bullet was aimed at all of us. That bullet was aimed at every one of us.” He stressed that Kirk died for championing ideas that resonate with conservatives across America. “Charlie was killed for expressing the very ideas that virtually everyone in this arena—and most other places throughout our country—deeply believed in,” Trump said.
He pointed fingers at radicals and their media allies, claiming they tried to silence Kirk simply because he was succeeding. “They lied about him because they didn’t want you to listen to him or learn from him,” Trump added. Trump argued that one side of American politics acts like it owns all the truth, goodness, and virtue, which he blamed for sparking political violence like the Charlie Kirk assassination.
“No side in American politics has a monopoly on disturbed or misguided people,” Trump said. “But there is one part of our political community which believes they have a monopoly on truth, goodness, and virtue—and concludes they should also have a monopoly on power, thought, and speech. Tragically, atrocities of the kind we saw in Utah are the eventual consequence of that kind of thinking. If speech is violence, then some are bound to conclude that violence is justified to stop speech.”
Trump labeled 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, the suspect arrested in connection with the shooting, as a “radicalized, cold-blooded monster” with left-leaning political views, according to officials. Robinson faces capital murder charges. “God willing, he will receive the full and ultimate punishment for his horrific crime,” Trump declared.
The former president also condemned those who celebrated Kirk’s death. “Some of the very people who call you a hater for using the wrong pronoun were filled with glee at the killing of a father with two beautiful young children,” he said.
Trump wrapped up by honoring Kirk’s legacy, urging people not to underestimate the impact of one determined individual. “The lesson of Charlie’s life is that you should never underestimate what one person can do with a good heart, a righteous cause, a cheerful spirit, and the will to fight, fight, fight,” he said, echoing his own rally cry after surviving an assassination attempt in 2024.
In an emotional moment, Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, spoke about forgiveness. She addressed the shooter directly: “I forgive him, I forgive him because it is what Christ did. The answer to hate is not hate.” She quoted Jesus from the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
Authorities continue to investigate the Charlie Kirk shooting as an act of political violence, highlighting ongoing tensions in U.S. politics.
