Jaishankar furthers India’s ties with countries around the world at meetings, encounters with ministers

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made the most of the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level session in New York on September 27. He held talks with several top diplomats to boost India’s ties with their nations and get a better sense of global perspectives.
Jaishankar jumped into key group discussions too. He joined meetings of BRICS—the bloc of major emerging economies—IBSA, which brings together India, Brazil, and South Africa—and a special India-CELAC gathering. CELAC represents the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. Trade and the push for reforming outdated multilateral institutions topped the agenda at these sessions.
One standout meeting was with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. On X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar called it a “useful discussion” covering India-Russia bilateral ties, the ongoing Ukraine conflict, and the latest Middle East developments.
He also chatted with the United Arab Emirates’ Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. They swapped views on strengthening bilateral cooperation ahead of their Joint Commission meeting, which focuses on deepening India-UAE relations. Jaishankar appreciated Al Nahyan’s take on current global events.
Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger praised their “thoughtful discussion” on X, noting that building their strong partnership—both directly with Austria and in a broader European context—benefits everyone. Jaishankar described their talk as lively, touching on today’s geopolitics and the big choices facing India and Europe.
Jaishankar rounded out his day with meetings alongside other foreign ministers, including Paul Chet Greene of Antigua and Barbuda, Mario Lubetkin of Uruguay, Sugiono of Indonesia, Timothy Musa Kabba of Sierra Leone, and Toiu Oana of Romania.
A highlight was co-chairing the India-CELAC meeting with Colombia’s Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio. Jaishankar shared on X that they stressed the urgent need to revamp multilateral institutions so they truly reflect the voice of the Global South. The two sides committed to ramping up cooperation in areas like agriculture, trade, health, digital tech, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and capacity building.
Looking ahead, they plan to explore fresh partnerships in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), technology, critical minerals, space exploration, and renewable energy. These moves underscore India’s growing focus on South-South collaboration and global reforms.
