It’s been exactly one year since the death of Sitaram Yechury, the former CPI(M) General Secretary, and his absence still hits the party hard. Yechury was the face of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) across India, and without him, the CPI(M) is facing a real leadership vacuum that’s hurting its role in the opposition too.
Remember Yechury’s warm smile and razor-sharp mind? He had this knack for cutting through political chaos with clear ideas and earning respect from everyone, no matter their party. He was the glue holding the INDIA bloc together, building bridges with leaders from Congress and beyond.
Yechury died from a lung infection just as the party geared up for its Madurai Congress. He’d been steering the CPI(M) since the Visakhapatnam Congress. In the tough months after, veteran Prakash Karat stepped in to coordinate until the Madurai session picked Kerala leader M.A. Baby as the new General Secretary.
Baby’s been working to build a fresh team, but insiders and outsiders agree—he hasn’t quite matched Yechury’s impact yet. Some critics even say the CPI(M) under Baby feels too focused on Kerala, turning it into a regional player rather than a national force.
Kerala is the party’s last big stronghold, thanks to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s tight grip for almost a decade. But with assembly elections coming up early next year, the pressure is on. A loss here could spell disaster for CPI(M), especially after it already lost ground in West Bengal and Tripura with no quick comeback in sight.
As the party pushes forward in this shaky time, everyone misses Yechury’s leadership and that special political touch he brought to every challenge.
