51 road projects implemented in Manipur in last five years: MoS MoRTH

Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta visited Manipur for three days on Thursday. He said the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is stepping up road work across the state, covering 11 national highways that total 1,774 km.

So far, 747 km of roads have been upgraded and blacktopped. Many old single‑lane stretches are being widened to two lanes. The remaining 332 km should finish by the end of FY 2026‑27. In total, 51 projects are underway with a spend of about ₹12,000 crore over the past five years.

Some projects stalled because of land‑acquisition and forest‑clearance delays—35 packages were affected. MoRTH says the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) is refocusing to finish them on time. Three main corridors—Imphal‑Jiribam (NH‑37), Yaingangpokpi‑Finch Corner (NH‑202), and Tamenglong‑Mahur (NH‑137)—along with NH‑102B (Churachandpur‑Tuivai) and NH‑129A (Maram‑Peren) are targeted for completion by FY 2025‑26.

A 658‑km Indo‑Myanmar Border Road is in feasibility study and will soon be declared a new National Highway. Connectivity with neighboring Nagaland is also improving; key routes such as Ukhrul‑Jessami (NH‑202, 156 km), Mao Gate‑Imphal (NH‑02, 97 km), and Maram‑Peren (NH‑129A, 104 km) are being upgraded to two lanes.

Tamta toured tribal‑influenced districts, including Pherzawl, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi, reviewing central and state scheme projects. He praised Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari and NHIDCL officials for their work on the Kangpokpi‑Kohima road, a vital link that shortens travel from Guwahati. The minister also talked with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan about boosting connectivity in hilly and interior areas, stressing the need for timely project completion to support trade and economic growth.

He distributed Ayushman Bharat cards, stationery under the Janjatiya Gaurav program, sports gear under Mission Vatsalya, and machines under the National Handloom Development Programme and PM Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana. Tamta highlighted Manipur’s natural beauty and cultural richness, urging citizens to join in building a prosperous and peaceful future.
