World’s tallest Lord Muruga statue to come up at Marudhamalai foothills in TN’s Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu is gearing up for a massive project that could put Coimbatore on the global map: the world’s tallest statue of Lord Muruga at the famous Subramaniaswamy Temple in Marudhamalai. This ambitious initiative promises to supercharge spiritual tourism in the area, drawing devotees and visitors from far and wide.

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has greenlit a whopping 184-foot-tall statue, with an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore just for the structure. The full project, including extra facilities, will total around Rs 146.83 crore. The good news? Most of the funding will come from generous donations, making it a community-driven effort.

Work kicked off in May 2025 with preliminary steps, and things are moving fast. Planners are also building a huge hexagon-shaped complex next to the statue. It will feature a museum to showcase Lord Muruga’s stories, ample parking, and other spots to handle crowds of pilgrims and tourists comfortably.

To make this happen, the HR&CE team has been hunting for the perfect spot in the Marudhamalai foothills. After several discussions, they’ve locked in 2.5 acres of empty land right behind the local bus stand. They’ll need more room, so they’re eyeing another 2.5 acres nearby for acquisition.

On Friday, top officials from the department visited the site to check it out. They shared that a key meeting at the Coimbatore District Collectorate will soon finalize the land deals. “This isn’t just a giant religious icon—it’s a cultural beacon that will attract people from around the world,” one senior official told us.

When finished, this Marudhamalai Lord Muruga statue will tower over all other Muruga idols worldwide, cementing Tamil Nadu’s spot as a hub for top-tier religious sites. The project will also create plenty of jobs during construction and spark economic growth through tourism, from local shops to guides for visitors.

With everything falling into place, the Marudhamalai hills are about to get a stunning new landmark, boosting Coimbatore’s spiritual tourism scene and honoring Lord Muruga in grand style.
