Doctors’ body in Bengal demands creation of dedicated ‘hospital security force’ like the RPF

Kolkata, Oct. 24 – Doctors in West Bengal want a new kind of safety team for hospitals. The Association of Health Service Doctors has asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also runs the state’s health department, to set up a “hospital security force” that would look after doctors and patients.

The request comes after a string of attacks on medical staff in both public and private hospitals throughout the state. The association says a dedicated security team—modeled on the Railway Protection Force—could keep patients and doctors safe.

Under the proposal, the new force would patrol every hospital on a schedule of three rounds a day. Its officers would routinely check that security measures are working. The association also wants a rapid‑response squad in each district. If anyone from a hospital is assaulted, the squad would arrive within 24 hours, meet the victim, and make sure the local police act quickly.

The doctors’ body stressed that police offices already in hospitals should be bolstered by state armed officers, not voluntary civic staff. It also asked the government to fill vacant doctor and support‑staff posts, review staffing rosters, and improve referral systems.

Mamata Banerjee’s health ministry has not yet announced plans on these proposals, but the doctors are urging quick action. The aim is straightforward: protect hospital workers and give patients peace of mind.
