New Delhi, Dec 7 (LatestNewsX) – Following a century in India’s final ODI against South Africa in Visakhapatnam, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to bring his form to the Mumbai squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).
Cricbuzz reports that a senior Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official has confirmed Jaiswal’s participation. “He has made himself available for the SMAT campaign,” the official said on Sunday.
The defending champions, led by Shardul Thakur, are currently in Lucknow, topping Elite Group A with five victories in six matches. Their last league encounter is scheduled for December 8 against Odisha.
The top two teams from each of the four Elite groups will qualify for the Super League, which takes place in Pune on December 12, 14, and 16, before the final match on December 18.
Jaiswal, who last appeared in the 2023–24 quarter‑final, missed the previous edition due to international commitments. In 28 SMAT outings, the 23‑year‑old has scored 648 runs from 26 innings, averaging 27 and straining at 136.42, with three fifties to his credit.
For the upcoming five‑match T20I series against South Africa, the national selectors rested Jaiswal and named a squad of 15 players led by Suryakumar Yadav on December 3.
Rohit Sharma’s future in SMAT remains unclear. While there have been hints of his potential inclusion, the MCA has not yet received confirmation. Earlier team reports suggested Rohit might join the T20 competition, but as of Sunday morning, no definitive decision had been made.
Adding Jaiswal to the Mumbai lineup will give the side a boost, as the young batsman arrives fresh after an unbeaten century in the ODI. He scored a brilliant 116* off 121 balls to help India chase 271 and secure a 2–1 series win.
