Pakistani PM, Field Marshal wait “somewhere in the oval” for almost an hour

President Donald Trump shared some lighthearted remarks with reporters from the Oval Office on Wednesday, just before his closed-door meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief General Asim Munir. “They’re coming, and they may be in this room right now—I don’t know, because we’re late,” Trump quipped, adding that both leaders are “great guys.”

The White House schedule confirms the session will take place in the Oval Office, marking another step in the growing US-Pakistan ties. Just days earlier, on September 23, Sharif had an informal chat with Trump after the US president met with leaders from eight Islamic and Arab nations, including Pakistan. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar joined in, as he noted in a post on X.

US-Pakistan relations have warmed up significantly in recent months, especially after Islamabad praised Trump’s role in helping end the May military clash with India. Trump says he used trade and tariff threats to broker a ceasefire between the two nuclear powers—a claim India strongly denies. At first, Pakistan’s military said the truce came from a direct proposal between their operations chiefs. But soon after, they credited Washington and even nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The positive momentum picked up in June when Trump hosted General Munir at the White House. They talked trade, economic growth, and even cryptocurrency. Weeks later, the Trump administration rolled out a new trade deal with Pakistan, plus plans to unlock the country’s huge oil reserves.

Munir returned to Washington in August, securing a $500 million US investment to boost Pakistan’s critical minerals sector. These steps highlight the strengthening US-Pakistan partnership amid talks on security, economy, and regional stability.

Meanwhile, Trump made waves elsewhere that day by signing an executive order greenlighting a major deal for TikTok. The popular video app, facing scrutiny over its Chinese ties, will now shift toward American investors and companies. Trump highlighted his recent conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying, “I had a very good talk with President Xi—a lot of respect for him. Hopefully, he has a lot of respect for me, too. We talked about TikTok, and he gave us the go-ahead.”

He emphasized the deal’s benefits: “You know, it’s run by American investors and American companies—great ones, the biggest. The young people really wanted this to happen.” Last week, Trump announced Xi’s approval for TikTok to keep operating in the US, with Washington maintaining strict oversight. Trump called it “a very good deal” that gives the US firm control over the app’s future.
