BJP govt working tirelessly to give justice to Zubeen Garg: Assam CM

Assam’s top leader, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, told reporters in Guwahati on Thursday that the BJP‑led state government is working hard to bring justice for the late Assamese superstar Zubeen Garg, who died while swimming near the sea in Singapore last month.

Sarma said the government had already arrested five suspects, including Zubeen’s cousin, Sandipan Garg, a deputy superintendent in the Assam Police. “People thought the guilty would get away with bail,” he said, “but now you see we’ve put five people behind bars. We will leave no stone unturned to give justice for Zubeen.”

The CM also compared the current administration’s speed with that of the former Congress government. “When Congress ran Assam, it took at least three days to decide where Bhupen Hazarika would be cremated,” he scoffed. “Today we’ve arrested all five accused in Zubeen’s death.”

Sandipan Garg was taken into police custody for seven days after his arrest. He was at the same yacht party in Singapore on 19 September, the night Zubeen tragically drowned while swimming. The same night, Zubeen’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, and event organiser, Shyamkanu Mahanta, were also booked in Singapore for culpable homicide.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by CID Special Director General M. P. Gupta, has been probing the case for a full week. “We asked for 14 days of custody for Sandipan Garg, but the court only allowed seven,” Gupta told reporters. “The investigation is ongoing, so I can’t disclose more.”

Gupta added that another Assamese businessman, Rup Kamal Kalita, appeared before the SIT on the second consecutive day, while the CID is preparing summons for other non‑resident Indians who were on the yacht on 19 September.

Two of Zubeen’s bandmates, musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta, have also been arrested and are being held for 14 days pending further questioning.

The case has drawn intense attention in Assam, with people hoping the BJP government’s quick action will restore confidence in the state’s justice system.
