On Gandhi Jayanti, which fell on the same day as Dussehra this year, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called for embracing Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless ideals of communal harmony and unity. She shared this message on social media Thursday morning, urging everyone to live by the spirit of non-violence and peace.
“Mahatma Gandhi, our nation’s great leader, has his name etched in golden letters in history,” Banerjee wrote. “His messages on non-violence, peace, unity, and harmony stay with us forever.” She highlighted one of Gandhi’s famous prayers—”Ishwar, Allah Tero Naam, Sabko Sanmati De Bhagwan,” meaning “God and Allah are your names, may God grant wisdom to all”—as especially relevant today. “Let’s remember these words and keep them close,” she added.
Banerjee has often used her public messages to promote communal harmony in West Bengal and speak out against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. Her focus on unity during Gandhi Jayanti underscores these ongoing concerns.
In another post, she greeted the nation and encouraged peaceful celebrations with safety measures in place. “May truth and justice always win over evil,” she said, tying into the Dussehra theme of good prevailing over bad.
Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, shared his own Dussehra wishes. He pointed to Lord Ram’s victory over the demon king Ravana as a reminder that righteousness beats unrighteousness, truth defeats lies, and good overcomes evil. “In today’s world, let’s draw inspiration from this to stand against injustice,” Adhikari said. “May Lord Ram bring happiness, peace, and prosperity to your lives. Warm wishes on this holy Dussehra.”
