White House border czar Tom Homan erupts at heckler who calls him racist during TPUSA event speech

At a recent Turning Point USA gathering on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso, White House border‑security chief Tom Homan was interrupted by a heckler who called him a “racist.” Homan, who was outlining the administration’s approach to immigration enforcement, said “Call me what you want, I don’t care.” He followed that with a scathing retort, “Why don’t you grow a backbone, put a Kevlar vest and a gun on your hip and go secure this border?” — a line that became the headline of the event’s photo captions.

A few minutes later, as Homan answered questions from the crowd, the same individual accused him of inspiring the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooter, Patrick Crusius, by “talking up the Great Replacement.” The protester alleged that Crusius travelled from his hometown in Allen, Texas, for 650 miles to carry out the mass killing, and that the gunman’s manifesto was steeped in white‑nationalist and anti‑immigrant rhetoric, drawing on the far‑right “Great Replacement Theory” for motivation.

Homan’s own speech in UTEP had focused on the chaotic state of the southern border. In a later interview, he explained that the “open border” had been an intentional misstep, describing it as “the open border was an action, was a mess, and it was by design.”  He has repeatedly suggested that the Biden administration deliberately left the border unsecured to create a new bloc of Democratic voters, even though he admitted in a congressional hearing that no concrete evidence backs that claim.

The 23‑victim Walmart shooting remains one of the deadliest single‑location mass murders in U.S. history. Crusius was found guilty of 90 federal murder and hate‑crime charges in 2023 and received 90 consecutive life sentences. He was also sentenced to life without parole on state charges connected to the same incident.

In recent statements, Homan reiterated his criticism of the current border policy, dismissing the president’s approach as a “mess.” Yet he has yet to provide verifiable data to substantiate his assertions. Meanwhile, the legacy of the El Paso shooting and the rhetoric it drew from the “Great Replacement” narrative continues to fuel debate over immigration, border security, and the cultural divide on the U.S. front line.
