A tragic attack unfolded outside a synagogue in Manchester, northern England, on Yom Kippur, claiming at least two lives and leaving three others in serious condition. The incident happened in Crumpsall, north of the city center, when a car slammed into a group of people and a man carried out a stabbing, according to reports from CNN and local authorities.
Police rushed to the scene at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road around 9:31 a.m. after a witness reported the car ramming into bystanders and the stabbing. Armed officers shot the suspected attacker, who later died from his injuries, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.
Paramedics arrived quickly to treat the victims, and worshippers inside the synagogue got out safely amid the chaos. Yom Kippur marks the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, drawing crowds to synagogues for prayers focused on forgiveness and reflection on the past year—making this assault especially heartbreaking for the Jewish community in Manchester.
In response, police activated PLATO, a national alert for deploying armed units during an active threat. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer quickly pledged more officers to guard synagogues nationwide. “The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur makes it all the more horrific,” Starmer said in a post on X. “My thoughts are with the loved ones of all those affected.”
Starmer is cutting short his trip to a security meeting in Copenhagen to return home and lead an emergency Cobra committee session, which coordinates government responses to crises. Four local hospitals went into lockdown after the Manchester synagogue attack to ensure safety.
Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham asked people to steer clear of the area while investigations continue. Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, he expressed deep concern for the Jewish community: “I can only imagine how people are feeling when they hear this news, the fear that that will bring.”
