Russian President Vladimir Putin pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat

Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Thursday evening for a state visit that has already shown how important the India‑Russia partnership remains amid evolving global politics. He was welcomed with ceremony at the front of Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu greeted him. The two leaders introduced each other’s dignitaries and later paused for a brief cultural performance that added a personal touch to the formal welcome.

A few minutes later, Modi walked Putin from the tarmac to the presidential jet in the same car, a gesture that highlighted Modi’s hands‑on hospitality. While on the plane, the Indian premier presented Putin with a Russian edition of the Bhagavad Gita, explaining that its teachings inspire millions worldwide. The image of the two leaders exchanging the book quickly went viral on X, with Modi posting a caption that read, “Presented a copy of the Gita in Russian to President Putin. The teachings of the Gita give inspiration to millions across the world.”

The next day, the Russian president laid a wreath at Rajghat, paying floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He was accompanied by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, who helped him sign the visitor’s book. Later, at Hyderabad House, Modi and Putin held an official meeting that touched on defence, energy cooperation, regional security and long‑term economic ties, after which each issued a joint press statement.

Putin’s itinerary also includes a business forum aimed at boosting commercial and investment links, followed by a banquet hosted by President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan that evening. Throughout the visit, New Delhi’s streets—especially Lok Kalyan Marg—were festooned with India‑Russia flags and bright lighting, underscoring the symbolic weight of the agenda.

When Putin first stepped onto Indian soil, the two leaders exchanged a warm hug that spoke of their familiar rapport. The visit has been marked by a series of high‑profile engagements, all designed to strengthen the bilateral relationship against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical alliances.
