New Delhi, Dec 11 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi called President Donald Trump on Thursday, and the two leaders focused on strengthening their relationship while touching on regional and global issues. Modi and Trump both stressed the need to keep the momentum going in efforts to boost trade between the two countries.
“Had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Trump. We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the US will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity,” Modi posted on X after the call.
Both heads of state reviewed the status of the India‑US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, expressing satisfaction with the steady deepening of cooperation across many areas. They also talked about widening collaboration on critical technologies, energy, defense, security, and other priority topics that are central to the 21st‑century India‑US COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology).
The discussion covered a range of regional and global developments, and the leaders agreed to work closely to tackle shared challenges and further common interests.
Earlier this month, Trump said he plans to visit India soon, calling Modi a “great man” and a “friend.” At a White House press briefing on Nov. 6, Trump stated that trade talks with India are going “very well.” When asked about a possible trip next year, he replied, “it could be, yeah.” He also recalled his 2020 visit, saying, “I had a great trip there with the Prime Minister.” Trump noted that India has largely stopped buying oil from Russia.
The White House reiterated that Trump respects Modi and that they communicate frequently. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president is “very positive and strongly” supportive of the bilateral relationship, adding that Trump’s team remains in “serious discussions” with India on trade matters.
