Explosion heard in Afghanistan’s Kabul; Taliban says no reports of damage

Kabul, Afghanistan – A loud explosion rocked Kabul late Thursday night, shaking the city’s capital and causing a traffic jam for miles.
The blast hit a Land Cruiser near Abdul Haq Square, a busy hub in the city’s center. Local witnesses reported the power cut at the intersection, slowing cars and leaving commuters stranded.
Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabeelullah Mujahid posted on X, saying the blast was heard but that no damage had been reported and that an investigation was underway. He urged people to remain calm while authorities look into the cause.
The incident followed the arrival of Afghanistan’s acting foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, in Delhi for a week‑long diplomatic visit. This marks the first high‑level delegation from the Taliban‑led government to India since the regime seized power in 2021.
In India, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X that the government looks forward to engaging discussions with Mr Muttaqi on bilateral ties and regional issues. He also welcomed the upcoming talks with Indian officials as a step toward deeper cooperation.
The Kabul visit coincides with the 7th Moscow‑Format Consultation on Afghanistan, which just concluded in Russia. Moscow hosted senior officials from Afghanistan, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The joint statement from the meeting called for Afghanistan’s integration into regional connectivity and cross‑border infrastructure projects.
India does not formally recognize the Taliban government, but the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed ongoing diplomatic interactions. MEA spokesperson Jaiswal emphasized continued engagement and humanitarian aid after a recent earthquake in the region.
The United Nations Security Council recently lifted a temporary travel ban on the Taliban foreign minister, allowing him to stay in India from October 9‑16. This exemption came after a visa‑waiver request was denied last month, illustrating renewed efforts from the Afghan government to strengthen ties with neighboring powers.
As the investigation into the Kabul blast unfolds, authorities urge residents to stay alert but not to panic. Meanwhile, Kabul and New Delhi continue to lay the groundwork for a renewed diplomatic relationship that could reshape Afghanistan’s trade and political links in South Asia.
