Himachal Monsoon: House and vehicles damaged after landslide hits Shimla highland area

Heavy Rains Trigger Landslide Chaos in Shimla: Homes Damaged, Vehicles Crushed, But No Lives Lost

Shimla, the scenic hill station in Himachal Pradesh, turned into a nightmare on Sunday night as heavy rainfall unleashed landslides and falling trees. Torrential downpours over the past 24 hours battered the state, but the worst hit was the Shilma Highland area near the capital. Local officials say the rain-triggered disaster damaged homes, crushed vehicles, and trapped residents, though quick rescues ensured no one got seriously hurt.

In the chaos around 2 am, a massive landslide swept through, uprooting trees and sending debris crashing down. Two residential buildings now stand unsafe with deep cracks, forcing families to evacuate. One house suffered partial collapse, with walls and roofs giving way under the weight of fallen trees. Eyewitnesses describe the scene as terrifying—loud crashes echoed through the night amid blinding rain and power outages.

Madhubala, a local resident whose home sits right next to the disaster zone, shared her ordeal. "We heard four or five huge bangs around 2 am, like the world was falling apart. The rain was relentless; we couldn’t even step out. In the morning, we saw the damage—four cars in our parking lot crushed, plus four more hit from above. A total of five vehicles got badly wrecked," she told . Nearby shop owner Leeladhar Singh also faced heavy losses from the debris.

R.S. Gupta had an even closer call. "At 1:30 am, I was heading to the washroom when a giant tree smashed into our house during the downpour. If it had hit me, I wouldn’t be here. Debris flooded inside, walls crumbled, and the roof caved in. Two of our cars were totaled, along with a neighbor’s. My child was trapped on the lower floor, but police and locals rescued him safely by morning," Gupta recounted.

Saurabh Gupta, another affected resident, highlighted the landslide’s sheer power. "This happened around 2:15 am near St. Edward School, just a kilometer from the Lift area. Lightning and rain made it hard to tell if it was a cloudburst or just heavy showers that caused it. Trees flew everywhere, and the force was insane—two vehicles parked uphill tumbled 40 feet, smashing into homes and piercing roofs. Debris flooded our house, trapping family members, but police and officials got us out. Six to seven vehicles damaged in all, two completely destroyed. Thankfully, no fatalities since it was late at night with no traffic," he said.

Rescue teams sprang into action, pulling a trapped person from a house and a store blocked by fallen trees and rubble. The individual walked away unharmed. While assessing the damage, authorities found several homes battered by debris, but no injuries overall.

Local MLA Harish Janartha rushed to the site and pointed fingers at poor infrastructure. "The drainage and sewage system near Portmore Government School is in bad shape—leaks and clogged rainwater channels worsened the landslide. Shimla sees most damage in September during the retreating monsoon, and this year’s prolonged rains have made it worse," he explained. He praised the quick response from officials, including the SDM and Deputy Commissioner, who restored traffic and evacuated unsafe buildings.

Relief is on the way, Janartha assured. "PWD teams cleared the roads fast. We’ll remove risky trees carefully and provide shelter and compensation to affected families after damage reports. The revenue department is speeding up assessments for immediate aid." Residents, however, must stay vigilant—unstable trees still loom as potential threats in the area.

This Himachal Pradesh landslide serves as a stark reminder of monsoon fury in the hills. As cleanup continues, the focus remains on supporting those hit hardest by the Shimla rains disaster.
