Chennai corporation to hold free vaccination camps for pet dogs

Chennai, Nov 8 – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will roll out free vaccination camps for pet dogs on Sunday, Nov 16 and Nov 23. The camps, held at six GCC pet clinics from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., are part of a push to enforce mandatory pet licensing and boost responsible ownership.

Starting Nov 24, GCC health workers will begin door‑to‑door checks. If a dog is found without a licence, the owner can be fined ₹5 000. The move follows new rules that require every dog owner to licence and micro‑chip their pets.

The vaccination drive builds on the anti‑rabies campaign that began Aug 9 and helped the city vaccinate roughly 113 000 stray dogs in just three months. Now the focus shifts to pets, letting owners get their dogs vaccinated, micro‑chipped, and registered all at once. Despite the new rules, GCC officials say pet registration still lags behind targets. As of early 2024, only about 260 pet dogs were licensed and micro‑chipped; the corporation has issued 9 063 pet licences this year, with 3 401 approved so far.

The GCC council recently passed a resolution to tighten licensing and vaccination requirements, citing better population monitoring and disease control as key goals. Officials say the push will curb rabies spread and encourage a culture of mindful pet care among residents.

Many pet owners, however, report trouble using GCC’s online portal after recent updates. Some can’t renew licences or upload vaccination and sterilisation records, forcing them to apply anew. The civic body plans to fix these problems before the inspection rounds begin.

With camps and enforcement starting at the same time, the GCC aims to raise vaccination coverage and hold Chennai’s dog owners accountable.
