Brett Lee inducted to Australian Cricket Hall of Fame

New Delhi, Dec. 28 – The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame announced on Sunday that former fast bowler Brett Lee has been granted inductee status, honoring a career marked by blistering pace, resilience and commendable sportsmanship.

Lee, now 49, ranks among the quickest bowlers ever, a title he shares with Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar. He represented Australia from 1999 to 2012, playing 76 Test matches, 221 One‑Day Internationals and 25 Twenty‑20 Internationals. Across all formats he claimed a total of 718 wickets—310 in Tests, 221 in ODIs and 38 in T20Is.

A pioneer of the early days of Twenty‑20 cricket, Lee appeared for teams worldwide, including the Sydney Sixers of the Big Bash League. He was part of the squad that lifted the league’s inaugural title.

In Test cricket, Lee helped Australia win three World Cups in 1999, 2003 and 2007, and he was a regular in Ashes series against England. Known for routinely clocking over 160 km/h, he combined sheer speed with refined skill, making him a formidable opponent.

His achievements were recognised with the Australian Test Player of the Year award in 2008 and the prestigious Allan Border Medal. Lee’s popularity also spilled over to India, where his IPL appearances and forays into music and film earned him a substantial fan base.

Peter King, chair of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, praised Lee’s contributions, saying:

> “Brett Lee’s induction into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame is richly deserved. He was not only one of the fastest and most exciting bowlers the world has seen, but also an outstanding ambassador for Australian cricket. Brett’s impact transcended statistics — he inspired fans around the world with the way he played the game, the respect he showed opponents, and the pride he took in representing his country,” King said in an official statement.

King continued:

> “Now a respected commentator, Lee continues to contribute to the game and its communities globally long after his final delivery. The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame celebrates players whose careers have left a lasting legacy on the sport,” he added.
