Tripura has outpaced the national average in providing rural jobs under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, or MGNREGA, officials announced on Tuesday. In the last financial year, the state created an average of 60 mandays of work per labor card holder, beating the country’s average of 50 days.
A top official from the Rural Development Department shared that for the 2024-25 financial year, the central government set aside three crore mandays for Tripura. But the state government went further, generating 3.53 crore mandays overall. That effort helped Tripura secure seventh place among all states and union territories for MGNREGA mandays generation.
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 financial year, the Union government has allocated 3.5 crore mandays, and officials hope to boost that number through talks with the Ministry of Rural Development. So far this year, up to September 29, the state has already produced more than 1.71 crore mandays, giving each labor card holder about 31 days of work based on their requests.
The Tripura government received Rs 548.18 crore from the Centre for these efforts and paid out Rs 505.83 crore directly as wages to workers. The official stressed there’s no funding shortage holding back MGNREGA implementation in the state.
On a bigger scale, Union government reports highlight how policy changes since 2014 have transformed MGNREGA into the world’s largest social welfare program. Over the past 11 years, it has spent around Rs 8.4 lakh crore and created more than 3,000 crore person-days of employment nationwide, driving rural development and water conservation.
Women’s involvement in the scheme has grown impressively, jumping from 48 percent in 2014 to 58 percent in 2025. The program has also built over 1.25 crore water conservation assets, like farm ponds, check dams, and community tanks, across India. These steps have cut down the number of water-stressed rural areas.
Plus, through the ‘Mission Amrit Sarovar’ initiative, the first phase alone has led to the construction or revival of more than 68,000 reservoirs, helping communities access better water resources.
