Shubman Gill’s Inspiring Journey: From Farm Boy to Indian Cricket Star
Shubman Gill, the rising star of Indian cricket, shared a heartwarming story about the moment he knew cricket was his calling. At just 11 years old, the now 26-year-old Test captain realized his destiny during a surprising batting stint against much older players.
In a candid chat on Apple Music’s official YouTube channel, Gill opened up about his early days. He recalled attending a camp for under-23 Indian fast bowlers in 2008. "I was only 11, and they were more than double my age," Gill said with a laugh. His close friend Khushpreet, a fast bowler at the camp, spotted a chance when the team needed an extra batsman for a practice match.
Gill stepped in at number seven or eight after the top order crumbled quickly. Facing fierce bowling from seasoned players, he smashed an unbeaten 90-odd runs. "It was just a practice game, but that innings gave me so much confidence. That’s when I thought, ‘Okay, this is what I’m meant to do,’" he shared. That single knock against under-23 bowlers ignited his passion for cricket and set him on the path to stardom.
Gill’s love for the game started even earlier, right in his family’s Punjab village. At three years old, he would watch cricket matches on TV with his father, Lakhwinder Gill, a former cricketer himself. Young Shubman started imitating the pros’ shots, mimicking how batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar played. His dad noticed the talent immediately and began coaching him at home.
"We had workers on our farm, and they’d throw balls at me while I batted," Gill remembered. "I was just three, but I copied the TV actions so well that my father was shocked. That’s how my training began – right there on the farm."
By age seven, the family moved from Fazilka to Chandigarh for better opportunities. "The village didn’t have proper facilities, but Chandigarh was buzzing as Punjab’s capital," Gill explained. His father enrolled him in a local cricket academy, marking the real start of his professional journey. From those humble beginnings, Shubman Gill transformed into one of India’s brightest all-format talents.
Today, Gill boasts an impressive record: In 114 international matches, he’s scored 6,020 runs across 146 innings at an average of 46.30 and a strike rate of 80.05. That’s 18 centuries and 25 fifties under his belt. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he clinched the Orange Cap and helped his team win the title. As captain, he led India to a thrilling 2-2 draw in a Test series against England on their home turf. With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on the horizon, this poster boy of Indian cricket is just getting started.
Gill’s story shows how passion, family support, and a bit of farmyard practice can lead to global glory. Fans can’t wait to see what he achieves next!
