New Delhi – Indian Railways rolled out a massive plan to ease the rush of people heading home for Chhath Puja, one of the biggest festivals in northern India. As thousands pressed toward their families on Saturday, the rail network added special services, extra coaches, and a host of passenger‑friendly facilities on its busiest routes.
A new round‑trip “Chhath Puja Special” now links Rani Kamlapati to Hazrat Nizamuddin. Train 01661 left the old‑Delhi station at 7:30 am and reached Hazrat Nizamuddin at 8:15 pm. The return leg, 01662, departs Hazrat Nizamuddin at 8:30 pm and stops at Mathura, Agra Cantt, Gwalior, Jhansi, Bina and Vidisha before arriving back at Rani Kamlapati at 10:50 am on Sunday. The train carries 22 LHB coaches: 2 Second AC, 3 Third AC, 6 Economy Third AC, 5 Sleeper, 4 General, 1 SLRD and a generator car.
Overall, 6,181 special trains have been scheduled for October 28 nationwide to help workers return to their workplaces after the holiday. Across the country, more than 12,000 special services run, with 900 planned for the next three days to keep crowds moving smoothly.
In Bihar, about 30 stations—including Patna, Danapur, Rajendra Nagar Terminal, Saharsa, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Samastipur and Barauni—have added extra ticket counters, CCTV cameras and weather‑proof holding areas. Similar upgrades are in place at UP hubs such as Gorakhpur, Ballia and Varanasi. These measures aim to reduce queues and give passengers a comfortable waiting space.
Health and safety services were stepped up too. 24/7 medical booths opened at key stations such as Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Gaya and Saharsa. Fire‑brigade teams and ambulances were on standby to handle emergencies at all major stops.
To spread festive cheer, Indian Railways turned several major stations into Chhath‑themed hubs. Devotional songs played at Patna, Danapur, Hajipur, Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Sonpur, New Delhi, Ghaziabad and Anand Vihar Terminal filled trains and platforms with the rhythm of home‑bound pilgrims, echoing the joyous spirit of the celebration.
With these large‑scale measures, the rail network is ready to handle the high‑volume traffic of Chhath Puja while keeping passengers safe and comfortable.
