Education Ministry encourages inclusion of UPI in Schools under Digital transformation reforms for fee submission

India is pushing a sweeping shift toward digital payments in schools, the government announced on Saturday. The Ministry of Education’s Department of School Education and Literacy sent letters to all states, union territories, and key education bodies—NCERT, CBSE, KVS, and NVS—to adopt the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for school fees.

Why UPI? By moving away from cash, schools can collect admission and exam fees faster and more securely. Parents can pay from home, see the transaction instantly, and never need to queue at school counters. The change also fits the government’s bigger Digital Transformation plan, helping families learn how to manage money online.

The move is part of India’s “Viksit Bharat” vision for 2047, aiming for a digitally inclusive, citizen‑centric education system. Switching to UPI in schools promises easier schooling, greater transparency, and a boost to financial literacy across the country.
