In New Delhi on Monday, Vice‑President CP Radhakrishnan dropped by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to see how the upper house runs. He met the staff, toured the offices, and listened to a full briefing on the Secretariat’s duties – from legislative support to day‑to‑day administration for MPs.
The visit is part of a set of meetings ahead of Parliament’s Winter Session, which is slated to open next month. Radhakrishnan will meet floor leaders from every party in the house, including opposition groups, on Tuesday. This will be his first formal round‑table as the Vice‑President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, and the talks will likely touch on keeping the session smooth and orderly.
Radhakrishnan, who was elected the 15th Vice‑President of India by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) bloc on September 9, took office on September 12. He won 452 votes against former Justice Sudarshan Reddy, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) candidate, who received 300. The voting threshold for a win was 377, reflecting the NDA’s clear parliamentary majority.
Election officials say 767 ballots were cast, with 752 valid and 15 discarded. The vote counting started at 6 p.m. in the Parliament House’s Vasudha building.
Radhakrishnan’s term will run until 2030, unless it ends earlier. As the ex officio chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, he will preside over house meetings and will act as President if that office becomes vacant, in line with Articles 67 and 71 of the Constitution.
