Ex-US player on FIFA WC 2026 task force

Former US soccer star Alexi Lalas is lending his expertise to the White House’s FIFA World Cup 2026 task force. The ex-player, who earned 96 caps for the US national team, shared his insights with executive director Andrew Giuliani as preparations heat up for the big tournament next year.

Lalas stressed the need to tackle any doubts about the event’s welcoming vibe right away. “You have to nip that in the bud and do it openly, clearly, and efficiently,” he told POLITICO, as reported by Goal.com. He pointed out that the task force is zeroing in on off-field challenges like security, visas, and infrastructure to ensure smooth sailing for everyone.

“It’s not about the actual kicking of the ball,” Lalas explained. “We’re focusing on security, visas for travelers from abroad, infrastructure in the host cities, and even FanFests.” With the World Cup 2026 set to draw fans from around the globe, these details could make or break the experience.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has assured that visitors worldwide can attend without hassle. The tournament, co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, faces some criticism from human rights groups over US policies, but organizers are pushing back with proactive steps.

Giuliani highlighted recent wins in the visa process. “Take Mexico—wait times were over 800 days a year ago, but now they’re under 275 days,” he said. The State Department urges early applications to keep things on track for the June 11 to July 19 showdown. Plus, a whopping $625 million has been allocated for security in new legislation. The task force plans to team up with 11 US host committees to equip every city with top-notch resources.

Lalas also sees the event as a bridge-builder amid global tensions. He noted that the US could have hosted solo with its strong infrastructure, but partnering with Mexico and Canada made it a winner in the bidding. “The current situation between our teams is tough, but hopefully this World Cup brings people together,” he added.

This marks the first World Cup across three nations and the debut with 48 teams. Sixteen venues are locked in: 11 in the US, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. US host cities include New York/New Jersey (MetLife Stadium), Los Angeles (SoFi Stadium), Dallas (AT&T Stadium), San Francisco Bay Area (Levi’s Stadium), Miami (Hard Rock Stadium), Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium), Seattle (Lumen Field), Houston (NRG Stadium), Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial Field), Kansas City (Arrowhead Stadium), and Boston (Gillette Stadium).

Fans are buzzing—will this mega-event unite the world on and off the pitch? Stay tuned as World Cup 2026 plans ramp up.
