Dramatic video shows hero cops pulling unconscious driver from fiery NJ wreckage — after phone saved his life
A dramatic dash‑camera clip shows police officers in New Jersey pulling an unconscious man from the blazing wreck of his car, a rescue that was made possible by his iPhone’s “Call After Severe Crash feature.”
Safwan Islam, 26, swerved into a tree after apparently having a medical episode while driving on Route 27 near Franklin Township. While still unconscious, his phone rang 911 automatically after a 20‑second countdown, alerting responders before the vehicle went up in flames.
When the South Brunswick Police intervened, officers Yash Shroff and Thomas Sites broke a side window and hauled the driver out amid intense flames. Officers later described the scene as “a miracle” and noted how the fire surged around them as they pulled Islam to safety. One officer even called it a “Thanksgiving miracle.”
The incident happened on Nov. 9, and Islam underwent surgery for back and neck injuries. He returned home to his family on Tuesday. His father, Naushad, wrote a heartfelt letter to the two rescuers, saying, “I can’t thank them enough… if I could, I’d say to them that it’s probably the work they do every day to save everybody’s life. For me, it’s just getting my son back.” Naushad told NBC New York that his son is doing much better now after a harrowing hospital stay.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by Franklin Township police, who have not yet provided a response to further inquiries.
