Senior citizen gang-rape case: Tension mounts in Bengal’s Kultali as third accused still at large

Tension is rising once more in Kultali, a village in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. On Friday, locals worry as the third suspect in the shocking gang-rape of a 60-year-old woman remains on the run.

Villagers told reporters they played a key role in catching two of the men late Tuesday night. The attack happened when the woman was home alone. Her husband was away at a hospital for eye surgery.

The three men sneaked into her house that night, aiming to steal chickens from the poultry coop next door. When she heard the noise and confronted them, they dragged her into a room and gang-raped her. They threatened her with a homemade pistol and a sharp weapon during the assault, according to her statement to police.

As the suspects tried to escape, angry villagers gave chase. They grabbed two of them, beat the men, and turned them over to officers the next morning. Police presented the pair in a local sub-divisional court on Thursday.

Officers say they’re working hard to find the third suspect in this West Bengal rape case. The incident has locals on edge, especially amid a wave of violent crimes in the state.

West Bengal has faced national outrage over several brutal rape and murder cases in recent years. Many involved young girls or women. The most high-profile was the August 2023 rape and killing of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, right inside the facility. That case sparked massive protests and calls for better safety measures.
