On Sunday afternoon a tragic accident unfolded at Yarada Beach in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Prachad, India. A Russian tourist drown after being swept away by the sea’s strong currents, despite clear warnings from lifeguards and the marine police.
Police Commissioner Shankh‑Barath Bagchi said the victim belonged to a group of 16 Russian workers from the nearby Naval Dockyard who had come to the beach for a day of fun. The marine police and lifeguard teams repeatedly advised the visitors that the water was unsafe for swimming because of its depth and powerful undertow.
Some members of the group ignored the warnings and jumped into deeper water. Two Russians were pulled apart by the waves. A Port Marine Police officer, along with the lifeguards, rushed into the surf to rescue them. One man was brought to shore safely, but the other was unresponsive even after CPR was performed. He was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
Police were unable to collect more details from the Russian group, as the tourists declined to share their personal information. The Newport Police have opened an investigation into the incident, looking into the circumstances that led to the drowning and the effectiveness of the safety warnings.
The incident highlights the danger of ignoring lifeguard signals and the importance of staying within designated safe zones when swimming. Residents and tourists alike are urged to heed beach safety instructions and remain vigilant in areas with strong currents or unexpected depth.
